I have had a lot of questions about new gear, if you are wanting to buy new gear I wanted to get this information for you., so you can see you options. (Keep in mind your child is not required to have these items.) Below is some examples of good quality gear that I would recommend, please keep in mind that this is not gear for you if you are not really into backpacking, hiking and a lot of camping. This gear is well made, performs exceptionally well, compact, and lightweight. This is not your average Department store gear; this is quality gear and will last a lifetime if cared for properly. This is what Clarissa and I use, as well as Chris and Zach, and have always been pleased.

When looking for new gear consider this, will I have to carry it, how much will I use it, is it well made, can I find it at a better price. If you have to place it in to your pack you want it small and lightweight. If you will be using it a lot, it should be durable. I shop around and find the best deal, or even go to e-bay to buy. There is a lot of both new and used gear on e-bay. Research your brand and other brands before you buy, compare weight, features, and price.

This is the tent I use, great, well-built tent.

Kelty Teton 2 Tent 2007

This is a great, light tent for the price!

The Kelty Teton 2 is a light weight (under 5 lbs.) 3 seasons 2-person tent. The polyester non-stretch, UV resistant fly provides excellent coverage as well as a 6.9 sq. ft. vestibule outside the large side entry door. Waterproof sidewalls extend midway up the sides of the tent thereby eliminating the need for fly coverage on the ends and thus saving weight.
